If you use ChatGPT Projects extensively, you may eventually want a local copy of the conversations inside a Project.
That could be for backup, archiving, reference, portability, or simply because important work should not live in only one place.
Projects can accumulate research, writing, code, recipes, business planning, study notes, or months of work around one subject. As that collection grows, exporting conversations one at a time becomes increasingly tedious.

How to bulk export conversations from a ChatGPT Project
Project Exporter for ChatGPT is a free browser extension designed specifically for this task. It is available for both Chrome and Firefox and does not require a separate account.
Install the extension
Add Project Exporter for ChatGPT from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons.
Open the ChatGPT Project
Sign in to ChatGPT normally and open the Project containing the conversations you want to save. A Select & Export button appears beside the Project title.
Choose the conversations
Select all conversations or only the ones you need. You can also change the order in which they are exported.
Choose Markdown or JSON
Each export job uses one format, and every selected conversation becomes its own file.
Download one ZIP
Click Export Selected Conversations. The extension creates the archive locally and downloads it to your computer.
Which export format should you use?
Best for readable backups, full-text search, note-taking systems, documentation, and opening conversations in ordinary text editors.
Best for structured data, scripts, software tools, analysis, transformation, and future migration workflows.
For most people making a straightforward backup, Markdown is the simplest choice. JSON is more useful when software rather than a person will process the archive.
What is the manifest.json file?
Every export can include a manifest.json file. For an ordinary backup you may never need to open it, but it gives software a structured description of what is inside the ZIP.
Project name · conversation titles · identifiers · timestamps · filenames · export format · export status
This means the archive is more than a random collection of files. The manifest provides a foundation for future archive, portability, and migration tools.
What happens if an export is interrupted?
Large Projects can take longer to export, so Project Exporter for ChatGPT supports resumable exports. Progress can be checkpointed temporarily in local browser storage rather than forcing the entire job to restart.
You can also queue exports from multiple Projects, with one export running at a time.
If the Select & Export button does not appear after updating the extension, remove the older installed version, install the current version again, and reload the ChatGPT Project page.
Does Project Exporter send your conversations anywhere?
No. Conversation export processing takes place locally in your browser. The extension does not send your conversation content to Bijal Patel, analytics services, advertisers, or third-party processing servers.
The extension uses your existing authenticated ChatGPT browser session to retrieve the conversations you explicitly choose to export. The resulting ZIP is downloaded to your own computer.

Is Project Exporter for ChatGPT free?
Yes. The extension is free to use on both Chrome and Firefox. There is currently no subscription, paid tier, or requirement to create a separate account.
Can these exports be used with another AI platform?
The Markdown and JSON files are already portable reference material. Whether a Project can be recreated natively on another AI platform depends on what that destination platform supports.
The included manifest preserves useful structure and metadata, which can help future import and migration tools understand the original Project. Cross-platform AI workspace portability is an area being explored, but it is not currently part of the extension's v1.0 feature set.
A simpler way to keep your ChatGPT Projects
If a Project contains only a couple of chats, saving them manually may be reasonable. Once a Project grows, bulk export becomes much more useful.
